circular linocuts almost ready to print!

The final Queensland Quebec Exchange print is done; it became an etching with aquatint, quite nuetral with figures i felt needed the containment of the dark circle. That seems to embody the idea of the force of water which was the theme. This plate finally found a home! Water is by its very nature reflective and ephemeral for me & im sure most of you and can be a timeless metaphor for connecting the subconscious with the everyday in the self. It presents changing forms that encompasses times of melancholy, transience and discovery. For me water is a shifting intuitive mass that is about transformation and loss; a becoming of possibility of experience that is memory, a story defining a moment, place and time.

The QQ print now settled upon it is time to get cutting again(more circular motifs). No matter what the most simple things(lino cuts) keep emerging as a constant for me in printmaking. I have these great tools made in Japan, bought in New Zealand that do not give you blisters or those portruding hard knobs of skin near the knuckles. They are longer,very sharp & made out of a light wood & can be bought from Homeprint in NZ.

You printmakers out there may know the state(s)/stages part of making prints can become moments of the never ending speed hump. In the back of my mind is the thought "what other possibilities havnt i tried?" of course it can occur ever so easily the other way when things come together in the most natural way. I am still resolving those prints begun at the begining of the year & also several others that need to be finalised.. I am leaning toward some embossed shapes in the background at the moment( though these seem abit intruisive). It is noticeable though that selling & exhibiting state/colour proofs is more common now so eventually these might be someones treasured item.

You know when you realise something thats been right there in front of you all along.. This is like that. You all are probably way better at this but i just used to draw immediatly onto plates, scratching & overlaying stuff. Well now i am trying & enjoying the feel of skecthbooks.. I have a lot of unfilled,halfilled sketchbooks around here & i have decided to also fill them & shelve them for times when the illusive idea escapes me....duh! It is also a wonderful time of drawing when you are able to process your thoughts & also experiment.. so heres to more drawings for prints in the making. I draw during ad breaks,waiting in the car park, at the doctors appointment & you know it feels good even when ive had too much coffee.

"Once again i am myself inside my own body"

A lifetime ago, i found time to read novels, long National Geographic articles about exotic & interesting places & people;anything really. It was never distracting from the everyday existence rather it enhanced it completely. I really love this falling into characters & spaces so it seems strange to not do it so easily now. For instance i have had "The Life & Opinions of Maf the Dog & of his Friend Marilyn Monroe" by Andrew OHagan (The paris Review-on-maf-the-dog ) by my bed for over 2 months& i know its a great book too.

As you can see i find it frustrating... and recently whilst looking through some journals i had noted various lines(beautiful sentences) that reasonated with me from all the novels that id read & thought as ideas for prints....As part of the process im making them into a 7 Day drawing project that may one day appear as prints. One day!

It feels as though it has been a long & short week ..Easter celebrations & a lot of real home time which as it turns out was very relaxing. Moving on to ANZAC day http://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/anzac/anzac-tradition/#dawn & something i observe within a distance & some puzzlement. I attempted to make books, did several drawings & actually threw out a few old print mishaps that i was keeping to do something with. That made me a bit uneasy; i just don't like to waste the paper. I let it go only because i seem to have accumulated more than i need. I did find a few remnants that could be saved & turned into books so we shall see the results soon i hope.
I also received the catalogues from Hong Kong containing the biggest catalogues I've seen this year. This was an exhibition in which i collected all the Impress Printmakers Studio prints included in the Graphic Arts Festival Convergence/Divergence.The open-printshop has details in their newsletter

I don't know if this needs an announcement in fact it is evident... i am trying to stop a tendency to do lots at once & to concentrate on finishing one thing & put it aside & then move to the next... So what to do?
Well, well, well... time to rework this blog.
Ill continue to search for things of interest in Asia & the Pacific because I'm interested in the vast dynamism of it & the area is so rich with stories....but i just don't have the time or expertise to write proper in depth things that people want to read.I think that knowledge is lacking & disparate because of that so ill keep searching... I found a blog which is very concise & informative. The Art Radar Journal, founder Kate Cary Evans who lives in Asia & is originally from the UK; her team(?) focus on contemporary Asian art. Another from New Zealand is excellent nzprintmakers has reviews from printmakers & information about workshops & exhibitions.
Nz contemporary art & COCA are cool. Well that should keep you busy.

I'm making this site more focused on my own printmaking adventures & an outlet to sell stuff online. At the moment I'm developing a website & looking under the bed for all those prints & drawings...getting those plates that need reworking to print off again. It has to be done...this business of art.

Impress Printmakers Studio has begun efforts to raise funds to supplement that already provided by the local council in Brisbane. This year should see a suitable facility for printmakers in South East Queensland established in a renovated electricity substation at long last. It looks very promising with the project forecast to be completed by the end of May. Apart from the studio there will be office & workshop areas as well as a gallery space upstairs. One early development is this Etsy shop

selling works donated by the impress membership. Important to note that

memberships are growing too which is an indication of the need for such a

facility in Brisbane. These are my contribution - a set of collage, drawing &

lino 12 cmx12cm available for $25. All profits to Impress Printmakers Studio!

A recent visited to the Tweed River Gallery -a picnic no less... was a great experience & an opportunity to travel out of Brisbane for a short time. Besides the traffic, the gallery is accessible & a frequent stop for us. Whilst there we saw the Out of the Box exhibition a selection of New Zealand prints from Solander Gallery. I'm familiar with several of the artists works having seen them online however in person a print is so much more isn't it? Also on at the same time is Corpse Graham Peebles, Gregory Harrison, and Anna Austin, Australian artists who specialise in the printmaking technique of mezzotint. Beautiful velvet blacks!

In the adjoining gallery a series of paintings by Euan McCloud.

Surface Tension: the art of Euan Macleod 1991–2009 Monumental beautiful & dark. Shame it didn't have more space. I would have liked to have those works occupy the entire space....

Sometimes i feel that the ceiling needs to be higher there at the gallery...unusual that the architects have made a great building with all aspects of the environment outside capable of being view from the inside... but the exhibition space battles with itself depending on what is on show.
There is quite literally so much to see here....pack a picnic & enjoy.

Ink has such surprising & beautiful layers. From the softest of grey to the velvet black; i have pondered how kind it seems to me as i have been drawing this year. I just used to swish stuff around alot & could never control a brush other than to throw it in frustration! Now,the so called drawings are in various stages & are mostly small thoughts or insights that happen in a series & share characteristics of motifs i suppose that are indicative of that time. The black & white stripe fetish is still here & along with the faces & line...
Beyond all that i love the quiet nature of it all.
Well ahem this little number above is something for a trading card project that im a part of. Initially i wanted to do a small lino but i tried various things for 2 wks & my lines were filling in constantly SO this is what happend. My card is a digital image with the ink line drawing, i think i called it to fall or maybe in flight?? Long live ink!

At the moment it is raining here in Brisbane which signals summer. Really Australians dont have seasons; as in most parts of the tropics it is a wet & a dry with a little bit of everything in between. So inhale!The lush rain is here for the rest of the day & the light has changed bringing with it some vigorous thunder & window watching...with a cup of tea.

hello september..8 millenium goals

For some reason this blog has been askew in the void...both images etc all wonky like..
I have been putting together some work for an upcoming show about the millenium goals or MDG's as they are now known...which will be exhibitied in a church here in Brisbane. As i say that im really not certain how to do this in a humane & 'artistic' way...
It is reality with a thud & silence....
Progress has been slow... but ive settled upon 2 drawings & 3 small concertina books...looking at gender equality.I thought mmm book = learning = history = narrative...& collage as a form/method of rethinking/making...Difficult.. Ive been researching & looking at reports & remain positive & hopeful...poverty & lack of access to opportunity & education or consistent employment for women & girls is disproportionate with examples through the spectrum. Have a look at any of the UN reports they are all over the web...check out the goals...have a go at some level...there are various things to engage people to not feel they cant do anything...
The goals(MDg's) have a timeframe & are projected to achieve some form of success by 2015 by integrating a holistic approach involving governments, foundations, businesses and civil society groups.www.un.org/millenniumgoals

I have only visited Port Fairy in Victoria as a tourist some years ago & recall the beautiful little houses when walking about. Most people drive the ocean road & stop eat & explore in this part of Australia so why not take in a show too...perfect.

A messy day in the studio. Ruined a couple of quickies...sometimes the mash up works & more often they do not..i should know that because it means a waste of GOOD paper!! I make peace with it BUT...i hope for the best..
I proofed the linocuts & have more to do.I really do just enjoy the cutting as i havnt touched them since the first proof. Now there is a pile of in between lino's...

It surveys his career since 1991—the year he travelled back to his birthplace, Niue, and reconnected with the traditional Niuean art of hiapo. An exhibition in memory of Iain Turnbull who was a collector of all things as artists are...
Several artists(Madonna Staunton,suzanne Danaher,Glen Skien, Gwen Tasker,Ian Friend) are exhibiting items such as prints & assemblages made with Iains collected materials that included parts of a piano, windows, draws...all things full of possibilities.I am contributing some collage works using piano parts...wood/wire with felt edge that taps on the keys(?)...must find the name of these..

This is a terrific show, i saw this in Alstonville NSW but since then it has travelled up to north Queensland & back. For me the difficulty in starting things is to finish them. With a preference (i think) to do several things at once & i suppose i keep things close. It looks as though these etchings are complete now..Only one of them needs burnishing & i dont feel the need to add anything more into them in terms of colour. A few minor tweeks.....more paper to carry them..perhaps six altogether.
They belong to the night whispers thematically & id like to make a box for this series of prints eventually...mmmmmmm

It will be an exhibition that is sure to be an eclectic collection of works on paper. Curated by Russell Craig & Noreen Graham of Graham Galleries in Brisbane to coincide with PCA AGM & several activities that comprises.

The next impress printmaking workshop is fast approaching. Tell your friends & enemies.Collagraphs have so many advantages.It is so accessible to all participants irrespective of skill level & importantly keeps costs to a minimum. Printmaking can be a very expensive endeavor after the purchase of plate, paper, inks & then some. I think this is a worthwhile skill to learn for all avid printmakers out there, part collage, drawing,intaglio or relief - its got potential. I'm going to make a series i think...for the show & tell.

My first proof of the 'nocturnal gathering' triptych...as you can see it is rather dark & requires burnishing in parts... i am not used to applying tone & still learning. I have a friend who does wonderful colours & multi plate things that are marvelous to look at... something a bit down the track me thinks..
Actually i have an urge to do a plate with just line work...a layered something...thats down, down the track too at the moment..

It began with this..I have been drawing on & off..simply as a transferal medium to arrange & apply images onto plates for printing escapades but currently i find it has become a deeply satisfying thing to do. I enjoy the quietude & simplicity of it, thats a certainty. More importantly it is that it remains very surpising, an element i love about printmaking.. This is the first book i made with assistance from silent parrot press & im pleased that it worked as i seem to have to practice things lots of times before it materialises into something...The book has no covers with the stitching exposed...My photos are awful..my camera has started...

The screenprinting workshop was terrific - a great 2 days with participants engaged in individual projects. I was amazed at how keen they were,all full of ideas & willing to give them a go.Wonderful.
My lines were too light & after i had exposed the image on the screen the image dissipated...As such they (the drawings) are now going onto etching plates as there is the surface quality to carry them.. BUT screenprint ideas occupy my mind now - such is printmaking..
